Design specs:
Pole face diameter: 8 inches
Pole gap: 1.42 inches
Strength at full power: 0.82 Tesla
Power Consumption: 3 kW
Total coil turns: 538
Current: 55 amps
Amp-turn product: 25000
H-frame, 3 inches thick
Steel: 1018 cold rolled
Steel weight: 757 pounds
Copper weight: 145 pounds
Coils: ¼” copper ACR tubing, two coils, total 538 turns, 1800 feet
Description:
The electromagnet is an H-frame design. The poles are 8” diameter, 6” long 1018 steel, with 1” steel pole extensions. The frame is 3” thick 1018 cold rolled steel, 8” wide. The coils are wound from ¼ inch ACR refrigeration tubing. Insulation is provided by fiberglass sleeving. Each coil is 269 turns, with an outer diameter of 17 inches. The coils are connected in series; total coil resistance is 0.97 ohms at 150F. Power is provided by a Sorensen DCS 55-55 power supply. Nominal current is 55 amps, at 55V (3 kW power). Water cooling is provided through ½” tubing. Total magnet weight (with water) is 924 pounds.
The power supply is connected to the copper with 6 AWG welding cable, soldered directly to the copper tubing. The supply is protected from back EMF with an MOV, clamping diode, and series diode.
The poles are attached to the frame with ¾ inch threaded rod (1” long). The pole extensions are each attached with eight 8-32 shoulder screws, countersunk flush with the extension.
Water cooling is provided from ½ PEX connect to the cold water main.
The magnet rests on wood 4x4 boards. These distribute the weight and help separate it magnetically from the steel cart.
Current Status:
Magnet frame is finished, put together, and in place on cart with 4x4 timbers. Top and bottom coils are installed. Power supply is installed and connected. Magnet is operational at full strength. Max strength measured at 0.850 Telsa at 55 amps

TODO:
- Complete cooling - without cooling, coil temperature is too high after 90 minutes.
