Rack and Cart Design
The magnet and vacuum pumps are located on a steel heavy duty cart, rated for 4000 pounds. The cart is 30” wide and 48” long. To help distribute the magnet weight and keep the cart from influencing the magnetic field, the entire cart top is covered in 4x4 wood timbers. These 4x4” timbers are bolted together with four ¾” stainless steel threaded rods.
The measurement equipment and power supplies are located on a 21 unit mobile 19” rack. Rack shelves and blank fronts are used to hold equipment and meters. A power strip attached to the rack distributes AC power to the rack equipment.
The rack frame is connected to earth ground with a 12 AWG wire. The termination on the rack is a star ground point. Ground wires feed from this point to the cart and all equipment in the rack.
The Sorensen DCS55-55 power supply is powered from a separate 240VAC connection. A 30 foot cable connects to a 50A 240VAC plug with a dedicated breaker in the main panel. The rest of the rack equipment is powered from the power strip mounted on the side.
Four DC power supplies are located in the rack. A 24V, 2A supply powers the three vacuum gauges. A 28V, 6A supply feeds the RF power amplifier. A 12V, 30A supply feeds the diffusion pump cooler, rack panel meters, and the RF autotuner. A 15V, 2A supply feeds the RF pre-amp. These are fused with 1A, 3A, 5A, and 1A fuses, respectively. All power supplies have dedicated ground wires to the rack star ground point. All power supply commons are connected together.
