My electromagnet design called for 25000 amp turns to generate an 0.8 Tesla field. After juggling coil resistance, DC power supply requirements, physical size, cost, and heating, the best compromise was 1/4" ACR refrigeration tubing for the coil conductors. On a per-pound basis, 1/4" tubing is cheaper than magnet wire and allows for water cooling.
ACR tubing advantages:
ACR tubing disadvantage:
ACR tubing advantages:
- cheaper per pound of copper than magnet wire
- easy to use water cooling
ACR tubing disadvantage:
- no electrical insulation
- max length is 100' - requires joints
- larger diameter requires bigger coil
